How to Limit Stress During the Holidays
The holidays are a magical time to celebrate with friends and family, but this season can also bring stress with packed schedules, crazy to-do lists, and year-end projects. It is easy to get overwhelmed and look at the holidays as a sprint with a finish line instead of an enjoyable moment to sit in. Although much of the stress that comes with the holidays can be inevitable, there are steps you can take to limit the ways it impacts you in your daily life.
1. Set Realistic Expectations
The number of expectations set on us by ourselves, our families, and our jobs can be a huge part of the stress and overwhelm around the holidays. Take a serious look at what expectations you are setting for yourself and adjust for what is truly necessary. Many items on your list may not even be priorities. Making a list of your “must-dos” can help you systematically tackle your impending obligations and give you a more realistic expectation of what is possible.
2. Cut the Excess
Once you have set realistic expectations, it is time to trim the excess. What on the list is not a priority? Try to delegate or reschedule these things. Set a calendar reminder to revisit the list after the hustle and bustle of the holidays or over. You may have to reach out to some friends and co-workers to see if they would be willing to push meetings and lunches to a later date.
3. Be Present
Finally, the most important tip to limit stress during the holidays is to be present. It is easy to constantly be looking at our to-do list and what is “due” next. Being in the moment helps to remind us of the importance of what we have versus focusing on what is yet to come. At work, try to focus on your current task. It will help you limit distractions and be more productive in the moment. Enjoy the moment you are in with family and friends and know everything else on your list will still be there after the holidays.
